Expect the world to change overnight. Africa’s battle-scarred South Sudan on Saturday is poised to become the newest country on Earth despite renewed attacks launched by Sudan last week as independence day approached.

In case you don’t know where South Sudan is, the British newspaper the Guardian has created a brilliant downloadable, printable color map featuring the newest country, which is sandwiched between the Central African Republic and Ethiopia in northern Africa.

The map also includes some cool at-a-glance facts:

It’s not hard to guess that ritzy, seaside Monaco is pegged as the richest country in the world, as measured by gross national income per person. But who knew it was the second most densely populated state, after Macao? Vatican City (population 900) is pegged as the least populated state and China (population 1,347,565,000) as the most populated.

Among the newest nations listed are Kosovo (2008, only partially recognized), Montenegro (2006), East Timor (2002), Palau (1994), Eritrea (1993), Slovakia (1993) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992).

You might also be surprised to learn that the U.S. is listed as only the 10th richest country on Earth, based on gross national income per person. Besides Monaco, Norway, Switzerland and Austria are among the nations shown with higher incomes.
