Singapore: New theme park focuses on imperiled river habitats
Travelers can go rolling on a river without leaving land at a new theme park that opened this week in Singapore.
River Safari, the newest addition to Wildlife Reserves Singapore, showcases eight of the world’s best known river habitats, including those of the Mississippi, Nile, Mekong, Yangtze and Amazon rivers.
The park is home to 5,000 animals, including one of the world’s largest collections of freshwater animals.
“We look forward to bringing visitors up close to the fascinating wildlife that live in river habitats, which are disappearing faster than forest and marine environments,” said Claire Chiang, chair of Wildlife Reserves Singapore. The organization includes the Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari park.
River Safari is Asia’s only river-themed wildlife park, Chiang said. Among the animals housed within the 30-acre facility are male and female pandas (Kai Kai and Jia Jia), Mekong giant catfish and manatees, which live in the park’s Flooded Forest exhibit, one of the world’s largest freshwater aquariums.
Visitors also can wander through an Amazon rainforest at the Squirrel Monkey Forest exhibit or visit the Giant Panda Forest exhibit.
The park held a soft opening Wednesday and plans to continue adding exhibits. Admission prices: adults, $20, children, $12.
