California: Shaun White to lead Northstar’s 40th-year celebration
Olympic gold medalist Shaun White will lead a sparkling cider and s’mores toast to Northstar California ski resort at its 40th Birthday Bash on Saturday.
The all-day event at the Lake Tahoe area resort starts at 7:30 a.m. with first tracks skiing and breakfast ($80 per person) and continues with snowshoe races at 11:30 a.m. ($20 to $40 per person) and live bands throughout the day. Folks can gather at 3 p.m. at Northstar Village to catch the toast and some entertainment for free.
So what’s new after four decades? Ski magazine describes Northstar (a.k.a. Northstar-at-Tahoe) as having “changed from a sleepy to a top-notch resort,” singling out its terrain park and woodsy tree skiing for kudos. The resort began operations in December 1972, which explains the ‘70s costume contest and party that’s part of the bash too.
Snowboarders first took to Northstar’s slopes in 1988, snow tubing was added in 1997 and terrain park features, including a 22-foot Superpipe co-designed by White, followed. Vail Resorts bought Northstar in 2010.
White, who won his Olympic medals for the halfpipe in 2006 and 2010, calls Northstar his home training turf. He will drop in at the on-site Burton Snowboard Academy‘s kids clinic during the day too.
