Hawaii: That road to Hana? You can skip it and fly

Share

A drive along the legendary Hana Highway on the island’s isolated eastern shore is a memorable experience for some. For others, the twisting, two-lane road is too much.

Those in the second group now have another way to reach the remote village of Hana: They can fly.

Mokulele Airlines ([866] 260-7070) began offering a stress-free alternative to the 50-mile drive from Kahului to Hana. Aboard a nine-seater Cessna Grand Caravan 208B, the trip takes 20 minutes and passengers get the opportunity to see the concrete ribbon from the air.

Ticket prices begin at $59 each way. Morning and afternoon departures are offered.

Given its location well away from Maui’s heavily trafficked tourist trails, Hana has a limited variety of lodging choices, many of them expensive.

Mokulele Airlines also links Kahului, Maui’s main airport, with Kona on the Big Island, Lanai and Molokai.
