From LAX, Alaska and Delta offer connecting service (change of plane) to Bellingham, Wash.

Restricted round-trip airfares begin at $238. Alaska offers connecting service (change of plane) to Ketchikan and Juneau, Alaska. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $665 and $745, respectively.

The Alaska Ferry System can be accessed from Bellingham, Wash., or anywhere along its route north. Walk-on passengers can travel for as little as $329 from Bellingham to Juneau; a cabin with a view would add an additional charge of $352 or more depending on amenities. A car would be an additional $877 for a vehicle up to 19 feet.

Options are limited in this tiny, isolated town, but if you arrive by ferry and want to explore the area, the Stikine Inn offers a pleasant place to stay and dine. Some rooms recently renovated. This upscale B&B; is off the beaten track, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in a town where thousands of cruise ship passengers come and go daily. Romantic setting, nicely decorated, one-of-a-kind rooms. Alaska’s only AAA Four-Diamond lodging. Close to Mendenhall Glacier. Rooms for two from $399 (two-night minimum).

Break away from the cruise crowds at this locals’ favorite, where you can shop for stained glass, sculpture, crafts, yarn or beads while you have lunch. Cape Fox Lodge, 800 Venetian Way, Ketchikan, Alaska; (866) 225-8001, https://www.capefoxlodge.com. A tram will whisk you up the hillside to the lodge restaurant, where you’ll find great views, seafood, steaks and unusual fare such as reindeer steaks and bison burgers. Dinner entrees from $16.99.
