THE BEST WAY TO CHARLESTON AND EDISTO ISLAND, S.C.

From LAX, connecting service (change of planes) to Charleston is offered on Delta, United, US Airways and American. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $268.

Leaving the airport for the one-hour drive to Edisto Island, take Highway 525 south to Highway 17 toward Savannah, Ga. Exit 17TK to Hollywood, S.C., and make a left on the wonderfully named Toogoodoo Road, which connects to Highway 174 and the last beautiful 15 miles.

WHAT TO DO

The Pink Van Tour, (843) 869-1110, https://www.thepinkvantour.com. $20 for adults, $10 for children younger than 12. Tour’s leave from Main’s Market, 1084 Highway 174, Edisto Island, at 10 a.m. Mondays-Fridays, but call first, as reservations are required and the schedule is flexible.

Inshore Fishing & River Tours, (843) 869-1937. Call Ron Elliot (a.k.a. Capt. Ron) and he will arrange a meeting place. Capt. Ron may exaggerate and embellish his tales, but he never fails to fascinate.

The SeaCow Eatery, 145 Jungle Road, Edisto Beach; (843) 869-3222, https://www.theseacoweatery.com. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily except Monday, when it closes at 3 p.m. Crab cakes and shrimp with grits, $14.95 each. Every imaginable pie, $4.25.
