Women on the go get added style and convenience with the following new items.

New directions

Microsilk scarves: During World War II, some Allied forces used military maps printed on silk as a lightweight, water-resistant, stronger alternative to paper maps. The cloth maps showed minute details clearly and were easily hidden and transported. Now, travelers navigating unfamiliar streets can use silk maps that double as wearable art. Microsilk, a Canadian company, has introduced colorful silk handkerchiefs and scarves printed with maps of dozens of countries, major cities in the United States and abroad, several subway systems, and several French wine-making regions. The maps are soft, washable and reasonably priced.

Silk map scarves are $10 to $21, depending on size, from Microsilk of Montreal; (514) 598-8437, www.microsilk.com.

No puckers

Wrinkle-free shirt: Among the newest advances in wrinkle-free travel: 100% cotton shirts get anti-wrinkle treatment after they are sewn, avoiding the puckers that plagued no-iron shirts made of pretreated material. (When they were washed, the shirts tended to pucker at the seams because the threads were not treated.) The long-sleeved, tapered pinpoint cotton shirts have a straight hem, side slits and button cuffs. They are machine washable and are available in blue stripe, rose check, white and blue in women’s sizes 4 to 18.
