Not a drop to bottle to drink

Regarding “Bottled Rage” [On the Spot, July 27]: After taking our empty water bottles through numerous security and other checkpoints at Shannon Airport in Ireland, we were happy to see a convenient water cooler fountain right next to the gate.

Unfortunately, one of the security agents must have misread his guidebook. He came up to us and said that we couldn’t fill up our bottles. We were still right next to the gate, and there were no more security inspections.

We tried to persuade him: “It’s water. It’s coming out of the water fountain. We’re past security.”

What were we going to do, raise a protest and get surrounded by a bunch of badges? No, best thing to do is to show them your open palm, back away slowly, smile, and say “No, it’s OK. It’s fine. We’ll get on the plane now.”
