New lodge at Mammoth

Skiers and snowboarders heading up to Mammoth Mountain this season will find new lodging, restaurants and shops in the Eastern Sierra resort town.

Grand Sierra Lodge, the last and largest of three buildings in a condo-hotel complex known as the Village at Mammoth, was expecting to open most of its 110 units this weekend. An outdoor pool, heated year-round, was also opening at the complex, which is at the base of the gondola that links the town with the ski slopes.

Nightly rates are $169 to $950, depending on season and the size of the unit, from studio to three bedrooms. The complex is run as a

hotel although the units are owned as condos, said Leisha Baldwin, general manager of lodging for the Village.

Five more restaurants, including a pizza parlor, wine bar and sushi bar, also are scheduled to open in the development after Thanksgiving, said Ruth Harrell, executive director of the Village at Mammoth Neighborhood Co. Ireland for a lot less green

Ireland’s Aer Lingus is remaking itself on the model of low-cost airlines, an unusual tactic for a transatlantic carrier.

Aer Lingus dropped Premier, or business-class, service on most of its flights within Europe, and by April 1, all such flights will be coach only, said Brian Murphy, director of corporate sales for North America.

On transatlantic flights, including nonstops between LAX and Dublin, the airline last month lowered fares and dropped Saturday stay requirements for low fares. In coach, published long-haul fares fell by 20% to 30% and last-minute transatlantic tickets are now capped at $503 one way.

Premier fares fell 40% to 60%, Murphy said — or from $3,695 to $1,504 one way between LAX and Dublin.

Murphy said the changes were aimed at filling more transatlantic seats, especially with business passengers, who generally pay more than leisure fliers.

Airline drops JFK route

American Airlines on Nov. 1 will stop flying nonstop between Long Beach and JFK, ceding that route to low-cost challenger JetBlue.

American added the route in June 2002; it flies it twice daily. Spokesman Tim Wagner said the airline was dropping it to concentrate on expanding service from its Dallas-Fort Worth hub. It continues to fly from Long Beach to Dallas-Fort Worth and also has 11 daily nonstops between JFK and LAX.

Doff coats at security

Passengers must remove coats before walking through airport security metal detectors under rules issued last month by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

Coats are to be placed on top of other belongings and sent through X-ray screening. The order includes suit jackets, sport coats and athletic warm-up jackets, unless they are used as the “innermost layer of clothing.”
