Tired of waiting at border crossings? Now, there’s an app for that

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a new mobile app that will tell travelers how long they’ll have to wait in line at land border crossings to Mexico and Canada.

The app, announced Tuesday, won’t necessarily make trips faster, but it can give you a heads up as to which lanes are moving quickest.

The Border Wait Time app provides status on how many lanes are open, what types of lanes -- including those for people enrolled in expedited traveler programs such as SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST and Ready Lane -- and how many minutes it will take to get through.

For example, a screen shot provided by the agency of the U.S.-Mexico border crossing at San Ysidro, Calif., tells travelers they’ll wait 15 minutes in nine standard lanes, less than 10 minutes at six SENTRI lanes, and 10 minutes at seven Ready Lanes.

The app also displays pedestrian wait times by lane type.

Travelers with multiple options to cross the U.S.-Canada border can use the app to determine which route will be fastest.

The agency gathers data and provides hourly updates for most crossings, a representative said.

The app is free and available on Google Play and coming soon to Apple App Store.

Earlier this year, Customs and Border Protection launched a mobile app that allows prescreened travelers to submit passport and Customs declaration form from a tablet or smartphone. So far it’s part of a pilot program only available to travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
