Pyongyang Zoo

On a Saturday afternoon at the Pyongyang Zoo, hundreds of middle-class Koreans file past healthy-looking seals, hippos and orangutans. Young girls pet a tortoise, their eyes filled with wonder, as their mother snaps pictures on her cellphone. No military marches piped in through speakers, and no portraits of dictators adorned the walls.
