A U.S. Marine watches as an airdrop of supplies blows off course toward an opium poppy field near a Marine base in remote Qalanderabad, in southwest Afghanistan. The field was slightly damaged by the packages and the Marines assured the irate Afghan farmer that he would be paid compensation for the accident. The U.S. Marines have no mandate to destroy poppy crops and rely on local farmers for information on the Taliban, who extort the farmers.
