Smith International confirmed pending layoffs.
Smith officials said the layoffs among its several hundred employees at its Newport Beach headquarters will be announced Thursday but would not disclose how many employees will lose their jobs. Smith Vice President Paul Russell said the company must “streamline its administrative operations” to reduce costs. Smith Tool, a subsidiary that makes drilling bits and related equipment, laid off 700 workers Feb. 8.
