Orange : Shooting Range to Be Remodeled for Safety
The Orange County Sheriff’s Academy shooting range, closed since October because bullets strayed into the neighborhood, will be remodeled with new baffles to deflect bullets, the Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday.
The board voted unanimously to hire an architectural firm for the $250,000 project rather than to spend up to $1.5 million for a new firing range. The money will be used to construct baffles, tilted at an angle, over the firing area.
Supervisor Ralph Clark, who initiated the range closing, said he would do so again if the modifications don’t solve the problem.
The range was closed after a previous $26,000 remodeling failed to stop stray bullets.
The shooting range at 1900 W. Katella Ave. is used for target pistol training by academy trainees, local law enforcement officials and members of a number of state and federal agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service.
