Chicago Alderman Backed by Mayor Wins Reelection
An alderman backed by Mayor Harold Washington won reelection Tuesday in a contest marked by the secret taping of Washington’s efforts to coax a candidate to withdraw from the race.
Dorothy Tillman had received 7,205 votes, or 79% of the vote, with 54 of 57 precincts reporting in the nine-way race for the 3rd Ward seat on City Council.
James (Skip) Burrell, who had been considered her main challenger in the nine-way race, conceded defeat. He was running a distant second with the same number of precincts reporting, having garnered 769 votes, or 9%.
Burrell said he taped a conversation in which the mayor tried to persuade him to drop out of the race.
About 37% of the 30,831 registered voters cast ballots.
