Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird has hired a political consulting firm to run her confirmation campaign next year, it was announced Tuesday.

The Los Angeles firm of Zimmerman, Galanty & Fiman said it would manage the campaign.

Bird’s reconfirmation is being opposed by many conservatives, including Republican Gov. George Deukmejian, who says she has blocked enforcement of the death penalty.

“I intend to stand for confirmation in 1986,” Bird said in a statement released by her campaign firm. “I intend to seek whatever professional help I need to inform the voters of California about the work of the Supreme Court.”

Bird is the chief target of the conservatives, who also oppose the confirmation of Justices Cruz Reynoso and Joseph Grodin, both appointed by Democratic Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr.

The anti-Bird groups are divided over whether to oppose the confirmation of Justice Stanley Mosk, who was appointed by Brown’s father, former Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown.

Zimmerman, Galanty & Fiman has worked for Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) and seven ballot propositions in California, including the bilateral nuclear freeze measure approved by voters.
