Clayton Yeutter, President Reagan’s choice for U.S. special trade representative, pledged today to use “whatever measures the occasion demands” to protect the nation’s interests in international commerce.

“My basic philosophy in trade would be 100% in line with that of President Reagan,” the 54-year-old chief of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange told a news conference.

He said he had “an orientation toward a free and open trading system, but with the recognition that trade must be fair.

“There has to be a level playing field out there,” he said. “It’s important that the United States protect its own interests on trade issues.”

Reagan proposed Tuesday that Yeutter succeed William Brock in the Cabinet-level post, holding the rank of ambassador. (Story in Part IV, Page 1.) Brock was named last month to be labor secretary.
