The city has begun searching for a part-time coordinator to run a proposed farmer’s market where fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and cut flowers will be sold one day a week.

The City Council on Monday voted approval for city staff members to hire a person at a yearly salary of $8,320 to organize an open market for 12 to 20 farmers.

The market, which will probably open by next spring, will be in a large parking lot, park or perhaps a dead-end street, said Doug Prichard, assistant to the city administrator. He said several locations are being studied.

Only farmers who have certification from the state Food and Agriculture Department will be allowed to sell at the market, Prichard said.

It is hoped that the market will “create a community-type social atmosphere as well as generate foot traffic for other local businesses,” Prichard said.
