A federally financed study calls for sweeping reforms in the way American youngsters are taught to read, including more parental involvement, better texts, more careful use of standardized tests and better training of teachers. Strengthening the teaching profession is “the key” to improving reading skills, said Richard C. Anderson, director of the University of Illinois’ Center for the Study of Reading and principal author of the 119-page study, “Becoming a Nation of Readers.”
