Radical Group Holds Off Police
The radical group MOVE held police at bay in a fortified rowhouse today after a daylong standoff that included a five-hour deluge from water cannons, a tear-gas assault and two eruptions of gunfire--one lasting 90 minutes.
The MOVE members said they would not surrender until nine convicted murderers from their group were freed from prison. The water-cannon fire during the morning turned the front of the house into rubble, with window frames, lumber and other debris littering the street. MOVE members eat only natural foods, often uncooked, and avoid contact with bureaucracy. They keep scores of dogs and welcome rats into their home as part of nature.
