The government sent tanks and troops to Bataan province today as thousands of workers began a three-day general strike and a city-to-city march to protest the nation’s first nuclear power plant.

There were no reports of violence as 7,000 protesters began a march that will take them to the cities of Pilar, Orani and Balanga, where rallies were scheduled during the next two days. Col. Lorenzo Rapanan, regional military commander, ordered troops sent to Bataan following reports that “communist terrorists” would join the protest.
