Navy to Disperse 29 Gulf Ships
Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger, in an unexpected move, today announced a series of home port decisions that will spread 29 different ships among nine Gulf Coast cities over the next several years.
Weinberger said that the Wisconsin, the last of four World War II-era battleships scheduled for reactivation, will be based in Corpus Christi, Tex. But in what Weinberger called a “strategic dispersal,” dozens of support ships will be spread among Houston-Galveston, New Orleans and Lake Charles, La., Mobile, Ala., Pascagoula and Gulfport, Miss., and Key West, Fla.
