Exploratory probes have confirmed the existence of large gold deposits near the Czechoslovak capital, with an estimated value of $1 billion, a state geologist said Friday.

The ore is a district along the Vltava River, about 35 miles south of Prague, according to a report carried in the official press. There have been previous gold discoveries in the area.

Petr Moravek, one of two geologists who tentatively identified the site of the new deposits two years ago, estimated the value of the gold at about $1 billion.
