South Africa Develops Tear-Gas Substitute

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
Researchers here have come up with a new type of laughing gas to substitute for tear gas in riots and hijackings, the South African Press Assn. reported Saturday.
Researchers said the combination of nitrous oxide--sometimes used as an anesthetic by dentists--and oxygen reduces aggression, and could be used earlier than tear gas in dangerous situations.
