Electrical power surged into the shuttle Challenger as the countdown began for a complex science mission that will send seven astronauts into orbit for a week of star-gazing. The countdown started with the goal of a rare afternoon liftoff Friday, with the time calculated to satisfy lighting conditions for some of the astronomy experiments. It will be only the third afternoon launch in 19 shuttle missions.
