Torrance was one of 24 U.S. cities honored for its Sister City program at the 23rd annual Sister Cities International Conference in Baltimore last week.

The Special Achievement Award was given for the city’s celebration of the 30th anniversary of its sister city, Kashiwa, Japan.

Torrance sent Councilwoman Katy Geissert and the West High School basketball team to participate in the festivities.

The award was the sixth for the city since joining Sister Cities International in 1977. Torrance won Best Single Project awards in 1978 and 1979, Best Overall Program in 1983 and Special Achievement awards in 1980 and 1984.
