Guards at Beirut airport body-searched passengers twice before they entered aircraft, and workers were building a brick wall around runways previously protected by earth mounds as part of what a senior airport offical said was greatly improved security since the TWA hijacking crisis last month. An electronic gateway to detect passengers carrying arms, explosives or other contraband was reinstalled. Political sources said one of five Syrian military observers overseeing a crackdown on militia lawlessness in West Beirut would visit the airport regularly.
