Disaster assistance centers for people whose homes were destroyed or damaged in a series of blazes that charred up to 400,000 acres across California in recent weeks will be opened Tuesday, officials said. Workers will help fire victims determine their eligibility for federal and state loan assistance, said Ruth Austen, spokeswoman for the Federal-State Disaster Coordinating Office. A toll-free hotline will begin operation today for fire victims statewide and will continue indefinitely, according to a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The number, 1-800-643-1985, will be in operation from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday. In Los Angeles, a center at Dorsey High School, 3537 Farmdale Ave., will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 23 through 27. A center at the Don Adams Elementary School, 4672 35th St., San Diego, will operate the same hours. A date has not been set for the opening of a center in Ventura County.
