The Region : Volunteers Scour the Beaches for Litter

Scores of volunteers, armed with trash bags, turned out to clean up the beaches of Southern California as a part of a national anti-litter campaign. Several state agencies, including the Fish and Game Department as well as the Waste Management Board, helped organize the effort in cooperation with various civic organizations. Boy Scouts tended the oceanfront from Malibu to Manhattan Beach, while other trashbag-toting volunteers combed the shore at Bolsa Chica, Huntington Beach and Long Beach. California Coastal Commission spokesman Jack Liebster said he hoped the effect would be long-lasting. “We want to be in a position where we don’t have to do this again,” he said.
