Stepping into the entertainment scene during the holidays are beverage accessories and appliances, be it for wine, punch, hot grogs, tea or coffee. Either for the purpose of gift-giving or for personal use, new bar or table gadgets seem to pop up in store shelves at this time of the year.

Recently introduced, one beverage accessory that’s joining the popularity list is the Vin Glacier or wine chiller from IPI. Perfect as an ice bucket substitute at the table as well as for toting wine to a party or an outdoor picnic, these wine chillers are different in that they are made of waterproof insulated fabric and come in eye-catching bright colors. Because there is no ice involved, the chillers also keep bottle or table from becoming wet. How do they function? The principle is to envelope the bottle in a chilled atmosphere, which is accomplished by the unique design of the bag.

Refreezable “glacier bags,” similar to blue-ice bags, are enclosed in four long side-by-side pockets inside the tote. When frozen, the little bags maintain proper chill within 3 degrees for up to 1 1/2 hours. To insure coldness, it also helps to start with a well-chilled bottle.

According to Douglas Lupton, who designed and invented the product, “Being a boater, I started out with the idea knowing there was a need for a product that would eliminate the hassle of carrying ice. I also wanted to produce one that’s completely made in the U.S.A., and here it is, made in Toluca Lake, Calif.”

The wine chillers are available in two types: the table model and the traveler. The table model comes in more formal colors such as black, burgundy, gray and navy blue. It includes a chrome base for a more elegant service. The traveler tote will remind you of a ski jacket in bright yellow, red, electric blue, gray and black colors with a convenient carrying strap. Great for going anywhere--picnicking, boating or camping. Both products come in a nice hexagonal gift-type box.

The Vin Glacier has a suggested retail price for either model of $19.95. It is available at Gelson’s Markets , Beckel’s Luggage and Weiner’s Luggage.
