San Clemente : USC Student, 18, Killed in I-5 Crash
An 18-year-old USC student was killed early Sunday when the the car in which he was riding was involved in a five-car accident on Interstate 5.
The California Highway Patrol said Sean G. McDonald of Chicago was a passenger in a 1975 Volkswagen, heading north on I-5 at Avenida Pico at the time of the accident.
The driver of the car in which McDonald was riding, Robert Delurgio, 19, of Torrance, was taken to San Clemente Hospital for treatment and released.
CHP dispatcher Rick Crowe said the pile-up occurred about 4 a.m. when a 1967 Porsche driven by Donald Hughes spun out in a northbound lane of I-5. The Porsche stopped, facing south. A second vehicle attempted to push the Porsche out of traffic, but three oncoming vehicles, including the Volkswagen, were unable to avoid the two stopped cars.
Hughes, 39, of Huntington Beach, sustained minor injuries and was treated at San Clemente Hospital. He was charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter. He was being held Sunday at the county jail with bail set at $25,000.
