Several cruise lines and other maritime-related groups will participate in the kick-off festivities for National Maritime Week today on the Broadway Pier.

Representatives of Royal Viking Line, Sundance Cruises, Exploration Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises and the San Diego Cruise Industry Consortium will be on hand to answer questions and distribute brochures on the different cruises available from San Diego Harbor.

“Various groups will be involved with the day’s events, not just the cruise lines,” said retired Rear Adm. Joe Rizza, chairman of National Maritime Week events for San Diego.

“For example, the National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. will have a display up highlighting the increasing need for shipbuilders,” Rizza said. “Sundance Cruises’ Stardancer cruise ship will be in port, so there’s a lot to be seen.”

Rizza said that Thursday will be National Maritime Day. About 500 people are expected to attend a dinner at the Hotel del Coronado to celebrate the event.
