‘English Only’ Initiative
Mayor Bradley says he is going along with all languages for the United States. I live in an almost totally Chinese, Japanese, Mexican neighborhood now, although it used to be all white.
I have stuck it out because after 40 years in one home, I don’t want to change. However, my husband and I are alone, among a lot of new people and we can’t communicate with them, and they can’t communicate with us.
We love these people, but we are handicapped and so are they because in emergencies they can’t tell us to call the police and we can’t understand what’s wrong.
It doesn’t make for the friendly neighborhood we used to have.
I think schools should have courses at all parks, at all libraries, at many places where the public can convene, and teach English to all of them. They can keep their own language to talk among themselves and their kind, and we can be of help when needed.
Tell Mayor Bradley he’s making the biggest mistake of his career.
