Contributions from political action committees to 87 Senate candidates in the 18 months ending June 30 topped $24 million, Common Cause reported in Washington. It found that incumbents got $4.60 for every $1 their challengers received. Common Cause, a nonprofit citizens’ lobby, has frequently criticized PACs as promoters of special interests that exert excessive influence on congressional votes.
