For the first time in the baseball club’s 26-year history, the California Angels retired the jersey of an accomplished former player.

Rod Carew, the Angels’ first baseman from 1979 through 1985, was honored in ceremonies last Tuesday night at Anaheim Stadium before a scheduled game with the Minnesota Twins--the team for which he played 12 seasons and against which he hit his landmark 3,000th career hit last year.
