JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
The U.S. government will provide $2.75 million to fund 137 university scholarships for black South Africans over the next six years under an agreement signed Monday.
Signing the accord was Timothy Bourke, U.S. Embassy counselor for development affairs, and Mokgethi Motlhabi, director of the Educational Opportunities Council, a private, nonprofit group.
The council already administers U.S.-funded scholarships for 38 students enrolled at 14 South African universities. The program was begun last year.
