A U.S. Embassy official in Thailand tried unsuccessfully to confirm reports by Cambodian guerrillas that they have seen two Americans in Cambodia and found the remains of two others reportedly killed in Cambodia during the Vietnam War. The official, Garnett Bell, said he did not obtain the remains. He met in a Thai border town with two intermediaries apparently acting on behalf of the guerrillas, who said they had just returned from fighting Vietnamese troops in Cambodia. The guerrillas demanded money for the remains and for helping rescue the Americans, who they claim are living with Cambodian wives in northeastern Cambodia. The U.S. government does not purchase remains.
