New figures show the occurrence of AIDS among blacks and Latinos is more than double their percentages of the population, but health officials stressed that the disease attacks people “as a result of underlying risk factors, not because of their race (or) ethnicity.” The national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reported that 25% of the 24,576 AIDS cases reported through Sept. 8 occurred among blacks, who compose 12% of the population, and 14% of the patients were Latinos, who make up 6% of the population.
