West Virginia Atty. Gen. Charlie Brown, accused of “shaking down” his staff for campaign contributions, went on trial on eight misdemeanor counts of violating state election laws. A bid by the defense to delay the trial was denied by Circuit Judge Margaret Workman in Charleston. Brown, 36, a Democrat, was indicted last February and charged with asking members of his staff to buy tickets for a 1985 fund-raiser to pay off debts from his 1984 election. State election laws prohibit soliciting state employees for campaign contributions.
