Crews Get Upper Hand on 2 Blazes
A 10,000-acre blaze near Camarillo was controlled Wednesday while a smaller fire near Carmel was contained, firefighters said.
The Camarillo fire began Monday on South Mountain, causing about $1 million in damage as Santa Ana winds gusting up to 50 m.p.h. pushed it through an agricultural and ranch area. The fire subsided after the winds calmed Tuesday, and the Ventura County Fire Department said it was controlled at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Agricultural damage was light, with about 20 acres of citrus and 10 acres of avocado orchards badly damaged, county Agricultural Commissioner Earl McPhail said.
In Northern California, nearly 1,000 U.S. Forest Service firefighters encircled the 2,285-acre blaze in the Los Padres National Forest near Carmel. Full control could come today, officials said.
