Board Explains Minority Hiring

Share

The Board of Trustees of the El Camino College District welcomes this opportunity to elaborate on a point about minority staff hiring which was touched briefly in reporter Bob Williams’ story on Sunday, Nov. 9 (“El Camino Chief Selected to Take Top Position at D.C. University.”)

The Board of Trustees unanimously adopted an equal employment plan in 1972 which was revised as an affirmative action policy in 1975. Since then, it has been modified and updated, reflecting new goals in hiring practices. Since Aug. 2, 1982, the date Dr. (Rafael L.) Cortada’s presidency at the college began, minority hiring of faculty members has risen from 14.5% to 17.4%. We commend Dr. Cortada for his implementation of our affirmative action policy and its goals. Through this policy, the college’s personnel office circulates all position announcements widely throughout a cross section of all qualified populations.

The affirmative action policy is used not only in the classroom but campus-wide, assuring that the most qualified applicants are invited to apply for the various openings and that the best qualified person is offered the job. We hope this clarifies the college’s position on minority hiring.
