A state appeals court has overturned the results of a 1983 Santa Cruz City Council election on grounds that one of the candidates was elected illegally. The ruling, if upheld, would force Councilwoman Jane Weed to step aside in favor of Bill Fieberling, and the balance of power on the seven-member council would shift from a liberal slate to a more moderate to conservative political faction. The court ruling was based on findings that 193 votes were illegally cast on the UC Santa Cruz campus in 1983, with the overwhelming majority of the votes going to Weed. Weed, who received 145 more votes than Fieberling in the original ballot count, is expected to appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court.
