Muslims in the Israeli Parliament called for international troops to protect Arabs in Jerusalem, and a no-confidence motion against the government for its handling of recent disturbances was debated. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, however, was quoted on Israel Radio as rejecting the call for U.N. troops as unnecessary. U.S. Consul General Morris Draper said he would convey to Washington the Muslim leaders’ demand for U.N. protection. He said the U.S. “deeply regrets the violence” that has rocked Jerusalem since Jewish seminary student Eliyahu Amedi, 22, was stabbed to death last week. Three Palestinians were arrested in that case.
