Engineers from the University of Michigan are helping NASA design a spacecraft to probe the interior of a comet, knowledge the school says could help solve mysteries of the universe. The engineers are working to equip the craft with cameras and 12 other instruments to be launched in 1992 to rendezvous with a comet. The mission will be “NASA’s first attempt to penetrate the nucleus of a comet in search of clues about the birth of the solar system and the origin of life on Earth,” the university said. A new planetary-class spacecraft designed for missions beyond Mars’ orbit will be used.
