A judge in Birmingham, England, sentenced two Sikhs to long prison terms for plotting to assassinate Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during his visit to Britain last year. Jarnail Ranuana, 46, a businessman, was sentenced to 16 years and Sukhvinder Gill, 30, a dyer, to 14 years for trying to hire two gunmen to kill Gandhi. The prosecution had argued that the plot was connected with the campaign by Indian Sikhs for an independent state.
