‘Missing the Point’ on Hostages, Iran and Reagan
It is very ironic to see Lt. Col. Oliver North, et al choose to exercise their Fifth Amendments right to remain silent. However, I don’t understand the inconsistency of claiming to exercise the privilege, yet making a passionate plea of understanding and/or choosing to answer certain questions. Also, if President Reagan really wanted to “find out” what happened, as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces he could call the individuals in and order them to tell him what happened. The bottom line is that the President has failed to follow a well-known legal maxim, to wit; one should strive to avoid “the appearance of impropriety.”
