Maoist insurgents burned buildings and looted stores in the town of Vilcashuaman in Ayacucho state on Christmas Day while nearby Peruvian soldiers refused to leave their posts, residents and officials of the town said. About 180 Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) rebels set fire to homes of two officials, the county council building, the post office and the headquarters of the state development agency, officials said. About 30 soldiers stayed in their barracks during the three-hour raid, saying they had orders to protect the post and not to engage the rebels.
