The wife of American mercenary Eugene Hasenfus said Friday that her husband will meet with the FBI next week to discuss his gunrunning activities in Nicaragua.

Sally Hasenfus said the planned meeting with the FBI would be Tuesday or Wednesday, but that the time and place have not been set.

No arrangements have been made “that I know of” for her husband to testify before congressional committees investigating the Iran- contra affair, she said.

Nicaragua pardoned and released Hasenfus, who was serving a 30-year prison term for running guns to the Nicaraguan rebels, so he could return to the United States to testify. Hasenfus returned to Wisconsin on Dec. 19.

Cites Family Difficulties

Sally Hasenfus said that it is impossible for her family to return to a normal life until her husband’s involvement in Nicaragua is put to rest.

“I don’t think things will be back to normal until it’s over with and that’s a way off yet,” she said. “Right now we’re just trying to take it a step at a time.”

Hasenfus was captured by Nicaraguan troops on Oct. 6, one day after parachuting from a C-123 cargo plane that was shot down as it ferried guns and other military hardware to U.S.-supported rebels fighting Nicaragua’s leftist government.

Since his return home, Hasenfus, acting on his attorney’s advice, has declined to comment publicly on his activities in Nicaragua.
