Craxi Resignation Refused

ROME —
President Francesco Cossiga today rejected the month-old resignation of Socialist Premier Bettino Craxi and told him to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament.
Cossiga’s move appeared to be a last-ditch effort to head off early elections that could be called a year before their scheduled date in the spring of 1988. Craxi’s five-party coalition collapsed March 3 when he stepped down after feuding between his Socialists and the dominant Christian Democrats.
