Youth gangs rioted in Roman Catholic areas of West Belfast after the twice-delayed burial of slain Irish Republic Army guerrilla Laurence Marley, 41. Burning vehicles blocked several roads, gasoline bombs were hurled at British security forces and a firemen were withdrawn from the Ardoyne section when a mob threw rocks, smashing the windshield of their vehicle. A police spokesman said that more than 20 cars, buses and trucks were hijacked and set ablaze. Rites for Marley were postponed twice because of clashes between mourners and police, who were trying to prevent paramilitary displays at IRA funerals.
